Seating Object on a Sailboat

Where’s the best place to enjoy a morning coffee on a boat? At the bow! Seclude yourself from the rest of the crew and enjoy the flight.

Created and photographed off the island of Tahuata in the Marquesan archipelago of French Polynesia—one of the most secluded and sparsely inhabited islands in the world.

I used materials found on our boat, with the entire design inspired by traditional sail patterns. The back of the chair is based on a “batwing” sail design and is made from an old sail we no longer use, reinforced with battens. The seat is crafted from an old polycarbonate hatch.

I incorporated symbols inspired by Marquesan tattoos, an essential part of the local culture. Each symbol carries a deeper meaning, so I researched their significance and created a pattern designed to protect our boat.
